1:45am, 500 mates, one volcano

22 September 2026

Got picked up at quarter to two in the morning for a trip up Mount Batur, which is not a time I normally agree to anything. Base camp first, then a guide, then a fair bit of scrambling up loose volcanic scree in the dark. Turns out after months in Switzerland having entire mountains to myself, I’d forgotten sunrise is apparently a team sport here, shared with about 500 close personal friends I’d never met. Somehow we all made it to the top in one piece and the view was worth every stumble. Scrambling back down again with jelly legs was its own kind of achievement. Would do it again, ideally with fewer people and more sleep.
